Jail still not ready, but close
September 1, 2009 - Chuck Hunt
It has been a long time coming, but with any luck at all, it will be completed by the end of September. 'It' is the new Faribault County Law Enforcement Center, of course. It has been a long time coming. The new jail was just under construction when I moved to Blue Earth, and that was just two months shy of two years ago. The facility was supposed to open in April of this year. That date had moved back month by month until now it is set to be finished this month of September. An open house for the public to come and see it has been tentatively set for September 26 and 27. I have had a lot of visits to the new jail, including one on Tuesday of this week, Sept. 1. I have to admit it is pretty impressive. Not so much that it is so fancy, but just that it is so functional and basic. And big. I remember the first time I wandered around the building. The walls were up, but the floor was still dirt and getting ready for cement to be poured. It seemed huge then because it was all wide open. Now it seems large because there are so many hallways, doorways and rooms. There is the jail part, with every entry guarded with double doors. There is also the administrative area, with rooms for deputies, sheriff staff, even a courtroom and judges office. Hopefully you will get a chance to see if for yourself. Personally I think the sheriff's staff better be ready for large crowds when they hold their open house, because I think the taxpayers of the county are going to want to see what they are getting for their bucks.
