Heartbreaker

February 13, 2010 - Chuck Hunt
So, how many times are we going to have to use the word 'heartbreaker' in the pages of the Register? It has been a popular word the past two weeks. Especially as it pertains to Buccaneer sports. The boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Windom on a last second shot by the Eagles. It was an off balance toss by a Windom player, but as bad luck would have it, the ball bounced on the hoop and fell in as the buzzer sounded. Two days later the boys team lost another heartbreaker in St. Peter in not one, not two, but three overtime periods. Then the girls also lost to St. Peter in a heatbreaker on a questionable call. As if that wasn't enough, the wrestling team got five individual champions at the Subway meet in Sherburn - and didn't win. We used heartbreaker one more time in this week's paper, and this time it had to do with the gymnastics team. They lost by less than one point to Mankato West. That's right, LESS than one point. Of course, not all of the sports news is bad for Blue Earth Area. In fact, it is a good news winter sports season. The boys only have four losses, and all of those were very, very close loses. Not one was by more than four points. The girls, too, are having a great season. Both the boys and the girls should be seeded high in the pairings due out soon, and we wish them well in post-season play. They should do very well. A special congratulations to the girls basketball team, which has every single player listed on the recent BEA HS honor roll. Not many teams can boast of that record. The wrestlers are having a fantastic season again, and hope to show well at post-season meets. Ditto for the gymnasts, who, on Friday, took second place at the South Central Conference Meet, behind a solid and unstoppable Martin County Area (MCA) team. The Bucs edged out New Ulm for second place by less than one point. That would be a heartbreaker for the Eagles...and not the Bucs for a change. Whew!
