Is the Ward question a dead horse?
November 9, 2010 - Chuck Hunt
All four newly elected Blue Earth City councilmen were in attendance at last Monday's special meeting and budget work session. Allen Aukes, Russ Erichsrud, John Gartzke and Richard Scholtes were present at the meeting, sitting in the back row, listening as the council heard about economic development plans. Scholtes did more than just attend the meeting. He was appointed to fill out the term of Dick Maher. Then after January 1, Scholtes will officially begin his term of office as the representative from Ward 1. As I noted the new councilmen sitting in a row in the visitor's seats, it all of a sudden occurred to me that the ward vote question may not be over. Despite being denied by the council, then voted down by the citizens (some who said no and some who said no by not voting on the question), the matter may not be dead. What if the question comes up again, after January, and the council has an opportunity to again vote on whether to eliminate the wards - or not. This new vote might pass. There will be four new members on the council, out of the seven total (six council members and one mayor). The vote could be radically different than the one taken earlier this year, simply because a majority of the players have changed. Of course, if the question would first have to be brought up again. And, who knows if that will be done or not. Just one more thing to think about.
