U of Minn. student hurt in halftime competition

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A University of Minnesota student was hurt during a halftime competition at the Gopher women's basketball game against UCLA.

The student was wearing a sumo suit as part of a relay race at halftime of Friday afternoon's game and appeared to hit his head at the finish line.

He was wearing a hockey helmet, but the injury was severe enough that attendants cut the suit off of him and took him off the court on a stretcher. The start of the second half was delayed by several minutes.

The official Twitter feed of the women's basketball program said the student is a member of the school's band.

Eric Schmitt, a freshman band member, tells the Star Tribune (http://strib.mn/J303qB) the student was responsive and smiling when he left the court.
