KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — The head of Kiev city administration has resigned from President Viktor Yanukovych's ruling party after more than 20 people were killed in fierce fighting in the Ukrainian capital.

City chief Volodymyr Makeyenko said in a statement on Thursday that he was leaving Yanukovych's Party of Regions because "we must be guided only by the interests of the people, this is our only chance to save people's lives."

He said he would continue to fulfill his duties long so he has the people's trust.
