The Blue Earth Legion baseball team gained the No. 1 seed in the Sub-District Tournament.
Blue Earth posted a 13-1 overall season record to gain the top seed. United South Central was seeded No. 2, while Welcome-Sherburn had the No. 3 seed.
The tournament ran last Thursday through Sunday. The Blue Earth team had a bye in the first round and will play Minnesota Lake on Friday.
All of the Sub-District Tourney games were being played in Truman. Blue Earth’s games were after the deadline for this week’s Faribault County Register.
“We had a great season, so we are hoping to continue into the post-season,” says Coach Steve Sonnicksen. “But, we have had good records in the past and did not advance to the Section. We are hoping to break that pattern.”
The Blue Earth Legion is being led by pitcher Taylor Owen who owns a 6-0 record.
“Taylor has only given up six runs in 34 2/3 innings,” Sonnicksen says of his ace. “He has posted 47 strikeouts while only issuing 11 walks.”
Josh Amundson has also notched a perfect 3-0 record from the mound. Plus, the power-hitter has eight of Blue Earth’s nine home runs.
Owen and Dalton Hurn, all Blue Earth Area High School seniors, also led the team in hitting.
“We also had Garrett Anderson pitching a couple of innings for us again this season,” Sonnicksen says. “But, he is pitching for the Pirates this weekend.”
Blue Earth’s only loss on the year came in the second game of a double-header against USC.
“We beat them 9-4 in the first game,” Sonnicksen says. “But, they came back and beat us 7-3 in the second game.”
USC’s other two losses came at the hands of the No. 3-seed Welcome-Sherburn.
Sonnicksen expects some good games during the Sub-Section.
“There will be three teams advancing out of our Sub-Section to the Section Tournament,” the coach notes.
The Section will be played over the next two weekends in Redwood Falls.
Sonnicksen has Dave Hurn as his assistant coach. Loren Eckhardt is the Blue Earth Legion baseball representative.
