BEA rallies for 3-2 win

October 9, 2011
by Chuck Hunt, Register Editor
Just five days earlier the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers had fallen to the New Ulm Eagles in five hard fought games for their first conference loss of the year.

Last Monday night in Fairmont, it looked like it could be happening again.

This time the Bucs fell to the Cardinals in the first two games, 25-21, 25-15.

BEA would need to rally and come through with three straight wins if they wanted to defeat their South Central Conference rivals.

The Buccaneers responded and won the next three games 25-17, 25-20, 17-15 to secure the victory.

The win upped the Bucs’ overall season record to 14-5, and increased their SCC record to 7-1.

After the Bucs rallied to tie the match at two games a piece, it set up a fifth and final game which was supposed to go to just 15 points.

That final game went longer than 15 as it was a battle all the way.

The Cardinals were up 14-12 and only needing one more point to win when the Bucs came from behind and tied the game at 14-14.

Because a team needs to win by two, game five was now guaranteed to go into extra points.

BEA went ahead 15-14, but the Cards responded and tied it at 15-all. The Bucs were able to get the next two points to gain a 17-15 game win, and a 3-2 match victory.

Sara Warmka came across with 16 kills while teammates Krista Hassing and Annemarie Hoyt added 13 each.

Several of Warmka’s and Hassing’s kills came at critical times at the end of the fifth and final game.

Hassing also led in ace blocks with five while Warmka added three.

Macy Henningsen led the Bucs at the service line going 29 of 30 with 17 points and six aces. She also had 44 set assists.

Nicole Carr was 14 of 14 serving with six points. She also added five digs.

Janessa Jahnke was the dig leader with 12.

This week BEA hosts Jackson County Central on Tuesday night.
