As Blue Earth Area coaches expected, Thursday’s dual meet against Fairmont/Martin County West was going to be close.

The Bucs held on to defeat FHS/MCW 33-30 to claim a South Central Conference win in Blue Earth.

“When we looked at it on paper, we felt each team could win seven matches. I knew it would be tight and bonus points could be huge,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.

“Our young kids wrestled well again and it was a good team effort,” he adds.

FHS/MCW took a 6-0 lead when Trevor Schultz, ranked No. 3 in Class AA at 106 pounds, needed just 31 seconds to pin his opponent.

The Bucs answered with four straight wins.

Alec Huber scored a fall in 4:54 at 113, which was followed by 120-pounder Isaac Vasquez’s tech fall in 5:41.

Mike Ankeny kept the win streak going with an 8-6 overtime win at 126 pounds, and Luke Schavey’s 7-3 decision at 132 pounds built BEA’s lead to 17-6.

FHS/MCW would take its only lead of the night, 21-17, with a decision at 138, pin at 145 and forfeit at 152 pounds.

The Bucs coaching staff decided to forfeit to Bryan Andrews at 152, who is ranked No. 5 in Class AA at 145, and bumped up the next three wrestlers.

“I don’t like to forfeit to a quality wrestler like Andrews, but we did what we had to do to win the meet,” says Wirtjes.

The strategy paid off.

David Franta earned a 5-1 decision at 160 and Class A No. 4-ranked 160-pounder Carter Hanson received a forfeit at 170.

Chris Ramos claimed a 6-3 win at 182 and 195-pounder Kysten Zierke sealed a team victory with a 10-1 major decision.

FHS/MCW could have tied the score with falls in the two remaining weights, however, BEA would have won the tiebreaker by winning eight of the 14 matches.

At 220 pounds, the Bucs Class A No. 2-ranked Josh Johnson dropped a 1-0 to Jovan Ramos. The lone point scored was an escape in the third period.

Heavyweight Colton Hines, rated 10th in Class AA, closed out the scoring for FHS/MCW with a fall in 2:51.
