BEA wrestlers slip past Waseca, 40-31

Blue Earth Area wrestlers picked up another South Central Conference win, defeating Waseca 40-31 on Jan. 13 in Blue Earth.

The Bucs used a combination of wins in the lower and upper weights to down the Bluejays. They won four of the first five matches and four of the final five weights.

BEA got off to a quick start with pins from Ryan Gronewald (106), Alec Huber (113) and Jordan Stelter (120) for an 18-0 lead.

Waseca got a pin at 126, but the Bucs 132-pounder Luke Schavey answered with a fall in 2:45 to make the score 24-6.

The Bluejays, however, put together a win streak of their own to take the lead.

A pin, forfeit and two major decisions gave Waseca a 25-24 advantage.

The visitors took the lead when 160-pounder Zach Gehloff, who is rated No. 2 in Class AA at 152 pounds, earned a 12-1 major decision over David Franta, who was bumped up a weight.

Carter Hanson, ranked No. 3 in Class A at 160, put BEA back on top with a fall in 2:13.

Chris Ramos followed with an 11-4 decision at 182 and 195-pounder Kysten Zierke’s 14-3 major decision made the score 37-25.

Class A No. 3-ranked Josh Johnson clinched the victory for the Bucs with a 3-2 win at 220 pounds.

Bucs compete

at ELC dauls

Blue Earth Area posted a 3-2 record at the Estherville/Lincoln Central wrestling duals featuring six teams on Jan. 14.

The Buc losses came in the first two rounds, 39-32 to ELC and 68-3 to Linn Mar. They then defeated Sioux City Heelan, 61-12; Spirit Lake Park, 45-36; and Forest City, 33-32.

In Iowa, a coin flip determines what weight will wrestle first.

ELC grabbed a 9-0 lead with a pin at 220 pounds and a 1-0 decision at heavyweight.

Ryan Gronewald (106) and Alec Huber (113) gave BEA a 12-9 lead with two falls in 1:30 and 2:51 respectively.

The Bucs built 24-15 with pins from 126-pounder Mike Ankeny and Luke Schavey at 132 pounds.

But, ELC won five of the remaining seven matches for a team victory.

Linn Mar, rated No. 8 in Class 3A, proved too much for the Bucs with a lineup boosting seven ranked wrestlers.

The lone win for BEA was Class A No. 3-rated Carter Hanson’s 3-2 decision at 160 pounds.

The Bucs lost only two matches in routing Sioux City Heelan.

Class 2A No. 6-rated Spirit Lake Park looked like they were going to dominate BEA.

A lineup with four rated wrestlers taking the mat in the first six matches, SLP took a 30-6 lead on four pins and a forfeit.

Jacob Johnson, bumped up a weight to 152, started the Bucs comeback with a fall in 2:51, followed by a David Franta forfeit win and Carter Hanson’s pin at 170 pounds in 5:29.

BEA won four of the five remaining matches to claim a nine-point victory.

Sandwiched between forfeit wins from Kysten Zierke (195) and Gronewald (106) was a pin from Class A No. 3-ranked Josh Johnson (220) and a 5-2 Martin Granados decision at heavyweight.

Against Forest City, the upper weights again put the Bucs in position to win.

A Zierke pin at 195, Johnson decision at 220 and Granados’ fall at heavyweight trimmed Forest City’s lead to 28-27.

Forest City picked up a major decision at 106 to make the score 32-27 with one match left.

Huber was up to challenge and pinned his opponent in 1:46 to give his team a 33-32 win.

For the day, Hanson finished with a 5-0 record, earning a pin, technical fall and major decision.

Zierke was 4-1 with two pins and Huber went 3-2 with two pins.
