The Saints and Blue Earth Area Bucs entered the matchup both 3-0 in the South Central Conference.
However, St. James won the first five matches to build a big lead and win 42-21.
“The team has wrestled better. It definitely wasn’t one of our high points of the season,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.
“Every team goes through up and downs. We just have to pick up the pieces and put it back together,” he adds.
With three pins and two decisions, the Saints held a 24-0 lead.
Jesse Alleven returned to the lineup after being out with a knee injury for more than a month.
The Buc junior put four points on the scoreboard for his team with a 13-5 major decision over Kody Curry at 138 pounds.
St. James got a pin at 145, but David Franta (152) and No. 4-ranked Carter Hanson (160) won back-to-back major decisions to make the score 30-12.
That was the closest the Bucs would get.
Sophomore Kysten Zierke earned an 8-4 win at 195 and No. 3-ranked 220-pound Josh Johnson pinned his opponent in 5:05 to close out the scoring for BEA.
Of the 14 matches, the Saints won nine.
“There were some toss-up matches we thought we could win, unfortunately we lost them,” says Wirtjes.
“You have to put yourself in position to win those close matches,” he adds.
The Bucs’ overall season record is now 18-8.
