Both teams had their opportunities during the game, but when the final buzzer sounded, the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers had defeated the United South Central Rebels by a score of 43-37.

“The girls had some great moments and some not-so-great moments,” Buc coach Al Cue says.

The Bucs took an early advantage with free throws by Camille Driscoll and Krista Hassing helping boost the team to a quick 5-0 lead.

But after BEA was leading 7-3, USC came back and tied the game at 7-all, then took over the lead at 9-7 with their 7-0 scoring run.

The Rebels grabbed the lead again at 11-9 but the Bucs tied it at 11-11.

Then USC went on another scoring run and led by seven at 18-11.

BEA responded with their own run and grabbed the lead at 19-18 by the time the halftime buzzer sounded. A Driscoll 3-pointer had started the rally and Hassing finished it off.

The Bucs took a 25-19 lead early in the second half, but watched it disappear as the Rebels once again scored six in a row and led 26-25 after Kristie Overbo nailed a 3-pointer.

The Bucs’ Driscoll countered right back with a trey of her own, giving BEA the lead at 28-26 – a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.

After the game was tied at 28-all, the Bucs rattled off 10 unanswered points to push the score to 38-28.

With the score 40-31, the Rebels once more went on a 6-0 run and cut the lead to three at 40-37.

That was as far as they could go, not scoring another point while the Bucs made three more free throws.

The Bucs were led by Driscoll who had 19 points. Hassing added 15 and made a double-double by having 11 rebounds. Allie Curtis added four points.

“Camille really played well, as did Krista,” Cue says. “Defensively the team was very solid throughout the game.”

The Bucs had 13 steals to the Rebels’ nine, and committed just 13 turnovers to USC’s 22.
