Grapplers go 1-1, record 19-9

BEA’s 138-pounder Jesse Alleven puts his New Ulm opponent to his back and registered a fall in 3:38 during the Bucs final South Central Conference dual meet of the season held Feb. 3 in New Ulm.

In a matchup of two teams listed in the “Lean and Mean” category in the latest team rankings, Class AA Windom/Mountain Lake-Butterfield-Odin downed Class A Blue Earth Area 44-30 in Mountain Lake on Feb. 6.

The Cobras used five pins, a tech fall and forfeit to tally 41 of the team’s 44 points.

BEA never held the lead and trailed 23-21 after 152-pounder David Franta’s tech fall in 5:58.

But, W/MLBO won four of the last six matches to secure victory.

BEA’s overall season record now stands at 19-9.

Five wrestlers have topped the 20-win mark this season.

Junior 160-pounder Carter Hanson leads the way with a 26-5 record, followed by sophomore 113-pounder Alec Huber at 24-7.

At 220 pounds, senior Josh Johnson is 22-6 and sophomore Kysten Zierke has a 22-9 record at 195.

Sophomore David Franta has compiled a 21-9 mark at 152 pounds.

120: Jared Willaby (W/MLBO) tech fall Trey Wigand, 4:39, 17-2; Willaby is rated No. 9 at 113 pounds in Class AA.

132: Blake Spinks (W/MLBO) pinned Luke Schavey, 3:59.

BEA 65, N. Ulm 6

Blue Earth Area wrestlers closed out the dual-meet competition in the South Central Conference on the road with a 65-6 drubbing of New Ulm on Feb. 3.

The Bucs finished with a 4-1 record in the SCC, behind champion St. James with a 5-0 mark.

BEA never trailed against New Ulm, in fact, they lost only one match.

The Bucs had four pins in their first six matches, Ryan Gronewald (106), Alec Huber (113), Mike Ankeny (126) and Jesse Alleven (138).

Also winning by way of a fall were No. 3-rated Josh Johnson at 220 pounds and heavyweight Martin Granados.

No. 4-rated 160-pounder Carter Hanson needed to go the distance in his six-minute match to pick up a 9-5 win.

David Franta earned a 13-4 major decision at 152 and 170-pounder Chris Ramos won a 12-3 major decision.

The Eagles came close to winning a match at 126 pounds, but senior Isaac Vasquez scored on an escape with 13 seconds in the match for a 6-5 decision.
