Panthers end Bucs season

The rematch wasn't as close as the first time.

New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva (NRHEG)?downed the Blue Earth Area Bucs 39-23 in the opening round of the Section 2A Team Championships held Feb. 18 in Mapleton.

United South Central Rebels made it to the semi-finals, where they lost 39-25 to Maple River.

Class A top-ranked Jackson County Central (22-3) beat NRHEG 56-11, then No. 12-ranked Maple River (17-2) 59-7 in the finals to advance to the state tournament.

The Huskies will face Pierz in the state quarterfinals on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The No. 4-seed Panthers never trailed No. 5-seed BEA; winning nine of the 14 matches.

"They won a couple of matches they didn't the first time. There were three matches that had a nine-point swing," says head coach Randy Wirtjes. "It just wasn't meant to be.."

Earlier this year, NRHEG beat the Bucs 36-30, with both teams winning seven matches.

The Panthers took a 6-0 lead with a pin at 106 pounds, but Alec Huber tied the score for BEA with a fall in 3:24.

NRHEG won the next three matches to build an 18-6 advantage before 138-pounder Jesse Alleven won a 10-5 decision to cut the deficit to 18-9.

But, the Bucs could win only three of the remaining eight matches.

Carter Hanson earned a 19-3 tech fall win at 160 pounds, while 220-pounder Josh Johnson won 8-2 and heavyweight Martin Granados pinned his opponent in 1:39.

The Bucs end the season with a 19-10 record.

USC used four pins and four forfeits to down Medford, 48-32.

Earning pins for the Rebels were Jake Gonzalez at 120 pounds, Travis Brown (160), Colten Carlson (170) and Brady Thisius (182).

Against Maple River, USC was able to win only five matches.

With Matt Harpestad's 13-3 major decision at 113 and Dylan Herman pinning his opponent in 2:25 at 126, the Rebels led 10-6.

The Eagles took a 15-10 lead with a decision and a pin in the next two matches before 145-pounder Skylar Peterson put his team ahead 16-15 with a fall in 5:38.

But, Maple River back-to-back decisions to go ahead 21-16.

Colten Carlson needed just 1:01 to pin his opponent at 170 pounds and give his team a 22-21 lead.

Brady Thisius followed with a 13-6 win at 182 to give the Rebels a 25-21 advantage.

But, an injury default at 195 and pin at 220 clinched the victory for Maple River.
