The size difference is obvious.

But, two United South Central wrestlers do have one thing in common.

Sophomore 126-pounder Dylan Herman and senior 182-pounder Brady Thisius won bronze medals at the Class A Individual State Meet held March 1-3.

"I'm super excited. It was a lot more fun this year," says Herman. "I can't wait for next season to start."

In his previous two state appearances, Herman failed to place in the top six.

Thisius also qualified last year, but did not earn a medal.

So, his goal was to end his career on a winning note.

"I knew the competition would be tough. I just tried to stay on my feet as much as possible, get a lead and wrestle hard," Thisius says.

The two Rebel grapplers easily won their first two matches to make the semi-finals.

Herman posted two major decision wins of 9-0 and 13-4, while Thisius earned a 9-0 major decision and a 9-2 win.

However, Herman was pinned in the semis and Thisius lost a close 5-4 decision.

In the wrestlebacks, Herman defeated Section foe Eliot Jurries of Jackson County Central 7-5. The Rebel sophomore beat Jurries 1-0 for the Section title.

Herman then hung on for a 7-6 win over Gus McCarthy of Border West for third place, after leading 7-3 with 38 seconds left in the match.

"I had no change in strategy for the tournament. I just wanted to keep wrestling like I had been for the past couple of weeks," says Herman.

Thisius had a tougher time in his wrestleback match, facing Seth Petranek of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva, who he defeated 10-6 for the Section title.

This time, Thisius went into triple overtime to beat Petranek 3-2 to advance to the third-place match.

"I had a tough semi-final. I left everything out there on the mat. I had to let it go, stay focused and get prepared for my next match," says Thisius.

In another close match, Thisius won 3-2 over Greg Erlandson of Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah to claim the bronze medal.

Early at the state tournament, Thisius notched his 100th career win and picked up three more wins to finish with 103.

USC 170-pounder Colten Carlson opened the tournament with a 6-1 win, but lost his next two matches to get eliminated.

Jake Gonsalez (120) and Derek Herman (132) both lost their opening round matches.

Because the wrestler who defeated Gonsalez won his next match, that put the Rebel junior in the wrestlebacks. He was eliminated with a 7-5 loss to Richy Soto of St. James.

Herman was a knocked out of competition when the wrestler he lost to in the opening round dropped his next match.

Two Bucs won their first-round matches.

Josh Johnson pinned his 220-pound opponent in 4:07. He then lost a heartbreaker 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals.

Johnson won his first wrestleback match 5-2, but dropped another close decision, 3-2, to end his tournament.

Sophomore Kysten Zierke won 4-3 in his first match at 195 pounds, but lost the next two, 7-3 and 4-3, to be knocked out of competition.

Junior 160-pounder Carter Hanson lost 8-3 in the first round.

But, Hanson rebounded with a 12-6 decision in his first wrestleback match. He was eliminated when he lost his next match.
