Bucs crowned academic champs

By Staff | Mar 18, 2012

The Blue Earth Area wrestling team not only had a successful season on the mat, but it also was a good one in the classroom.

In fact, it was spectacular.

The Bucs, who posted a 19-10 dual meet record, recently won the 2011-12 Class A team academic title.

“As coaches, we’re proud of the season they had. Especially of their accomplishments in the classroom,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.

BEA was recognized as academic champions during the State Meet held March 1-3 in St. Paul.

To earn the honor, the 10 highest grade-point-averages of the team’s 19-member postseason roster were averaged.

The Bucs topped a 20-team field with a grade-point-average of 3.91. New York Mills was second with 3.72.

“The boys hold themselves to high standards and will be successful in the future and in their lives because of that,” Wirtjes says.

The last time a BEA wrestling team was academic state champions was in 2001.

In addition to receiving a banner – that will be displayed in the high school gymnasium – the Bucs were awarded a gold plaque.

New London-Spicer was the Class AA crown with a 3.90 team gpa, while Eastview had a 3.79 team gpa to lead Class AAA schools.

The academic awards were sponsored by the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association, the Minnesota National Guard and The Guillotine wrestling publication.
