Tennis drops two in SCC

By Staff | Apr 15, 2012

For their second outing of the season, the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer tennis team improved their play, but still fell 7-0 to the St. James Saints.

The match, played on Thursday evening, was the Bucs’ first home tennis meet.

“We are making some improvements,” Buc coach Terry Barnes says. “Despite these two early season losses, the kids are maintaining a positive attitude and are working very hard to improve their skills.”

BEA’s Eric Purvis, playing at No. 1 singles, lost 6-1, 6-3 to Taylor Berg St. James, in a hard fought match.

At No. 2 singles, Nick Lein fell 6-0, 6-1 to Shane Olson.

Hunter Myers lost his match at No. 3 singles to the Saints’ Connor Olson by scores of 6-3, 6-2 in another hard fought match.

Jaron King of BEA lost to Aldair Trujillo of St. James at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 1 doubles, the Buc team of eighth-graders Chandler Kienitz and Tronton Stindtman lost to Brock Mueller and Will Runge by set scores of 6-2, 6-1.

Tristan Drake and Cole Klinksiek teamed up at No. 2 doubles to play Earl Augst and Michael Hedlund and lost 6-1, 6-4.

At No. 3 doubles, Martin Granados and Ben Gettis lost to Kilian Wende and Cole Skow by scores of 6-1, 6-0.

The Bucs now have an 0-2 record both overall and in the South Central Conference.

This week BEA travels to New Ulm on Thursday and hosts Albert Lea on Friday.

St. Peter 7, BEA 0

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer tennis team had a real struggle on their hands for their season opener last Tuesday night.

BEA was blanked 7-0 by the St. Peter Saints in a match played on the Saint’s home courts.

“We had two players who had a very good day,” Coach Terry Barnes says. “Nick Lein and Ben Gettis played well.”

But, despite some good tennis play, those two Bucs lost to their Saint opponents.

Lein, a freshman, fell 6-4, 6-3, to senior Kevin Saulnier at the No. 3 singles spot.

Gettis, a sophomore, lost 6-3, 6-1 to freshman Matt Huber of St. Peter at No. 4 singles.

The rest of the Buccaneer squad struggled to win any games against the talented Saints squad.

Playing at No. 1 singles, sophomore Chance Andrews lost 6-0, 6-0 to senior Mitch Elofsin. At No. 2 singles, Eric Purvis, a junior, lost to St. Peter junior Nathan Juber by scores of 6-0, 6-1.

In No. 1 doubles action, Chandler Kienitz and Trenton Stindtman, both eighth graders, fell to seniors, Spencer Gault and Sam Peterson by a score of 6-0, 6-0.

Jaron King, a freshman, and Cole Klinksiek, a junior, lost 6-0, 6-1 to senior Alex Nadeau and Alex Willson, a sophomore, at No. 3 doubles.

It was the Buccaneers Martin Granados, a freshman, and Triston Drake, a sophomore, who teamed up at No. 4 doubles. They lost 6-0, 6-0 to the Saints Avery Bachman, an eighth grader, and Nels Kallus, a junior.

This week the Bucs travel to New Ulm on Thursday and then host Austin on Friday.
