Windy conditions led to some higher-than-normal scores for the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys golf team at Belle Plaine's Valley View Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Bucs took fifth place out of seven teams with a team total of 370.

"There was only one score in the 70s today and it did not belong to us," Buc coach Travis Armstrong says.

The Bucs were once again led by Andy Aukes, who came in with an 85.

"It was a struggle for him." Armstrong says. "Andy plays a really high ball flight on many of his shots, and this causes him to struggle under really windy conditions. He felt he could have done better."

Derek Abel showed improvement with a 92, the coach says.

"Although that is not his best score, he had some stretches where he played some good golf," Armstrong says. "I saw some good scrambling from interesting positions, as well."

The next three Bucs shot a string of scores under 100. Slater Peterson came in with 94, Trevor Zierke a 95 and Zach Curtis a 96. Logan Jacobs was the other Buc golfer, who came in with a 118.

"I wanted six scores under 100 and got five," Armstrong says. "But, I was also hoping for three scores in the 80s and only got one."

The Buc mentor says he hopes to find a nice non-windy day to practice and build up the team's confidence.

"I don't think we are as far off (from improvement) as the players think we are," Armstrong points out. "I think a little bit of confidence will go a long way in bringing these scores down."

Norwood-Young America won the meet with a 336, followed by Jordan with a 344 and USC with a 352.

This week BEA travels to Fairmont on Tuesday.

The Bucs current record stands at 5-9 for the season.

USC 182, BEA 186

It all came down to the fourth score to determine the winner in the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers and United South Central Rebels boys golf meet on Friday, April 27.

The Bucs Andy Aukes and Derek Abel and USC's Seth Olson all shot identical 43s to tie for medalist honors.

Then, USC's Nate and Ryan Pederson and BEA's Zach Curtis came in with triplicate identical scores of 45 to all tie for second lowest scores.

That left the meet tied up and the fourth score to determine the winner.

BEA's Slater Peterson came in with a 55, but USC had Nick Neuberger and Brett Ulrich both come in with identical 49s, enabling the Rebels to win the dual meet by four strokes, 182 to 186.

"It was very windy," Buc coach Travis Armstrong says. "The nice thing about the wind is that it affects everyone's ball equally scores were up for both teams as a result."

Rounding out the Bucs' scoring was Trevor Zierke and Logan Jacobs with matching 56s. USC's sixth score was a 53 by Cobi Bullerman.

The coach also says a lack of local knowledge of the Freeborn course where the meet was held also affected the Bucs play to an extent.

"We need to get better at trying to keep our scores down and avoid the disaster holes," Armstrong explains. "We were one shot per guy from tying them in the total score, and I am sure most of my guys could find two shots that they each could have saved."
