Eugene “Gene” Nelson, 82

Huntley A Memorial Service for Eugene "Gene" Nelson, age 82, of Huntley was held Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Community Covenant Church in Huntley. Visitation with the family was one hour prior to the service at the church, and continued following the service.

Eugene passed away peacefully with his family beside him on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at the Odyssey Hospice in Tucson,?Ariz. The Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont assisted the family with the arrangements.

Eugene "Gene"?Nelson was born on Oct. 3, 1929, in Winnebago, the son of Leonard and Elizabeth (Lange) Nelson.?He graduated from the Huntley High School and attended business school in Mankato before entering the U.S. Army in 1951. He served as a cryptographer in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1953. Gene attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter in 1943. He was united in marriage to Helen Backstrom on Aug. 21, 1954. Gene then transferred to Macalester College in St. Paul and graduated in 1957 and started a long career at the Farmers State Bank in Huntley that same year. He also graduated from the Wisconsin School of Banking in Madison, Wis., in 1968.

Gene served on the Faribault County?Bankers Association as well as the Minnesota Bankers Association. He was a member of Winnebago American Legion and was very active in Huntley which included the Huntley School Board. Gene retired from the bank in 1996, and spent the winter months in Tucson.

Gene had a love for flying which started at a young age and he obtained his pilots license as soon as legally possible. He owned several planes. One of his joys was the annual fishing trips to Canada with his son-in-law and grandsons. Last June his daughter,?Randi, was able to join in the "all male" trip, an especially memorable trip for Gene.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Helen Nelson, of Huntley; daughter, Randi (David) Shipley; grandchildren, Jeff (Lesley) Shipley, and Steve Shipley; two great-grandsons, Payton James and Parker Ryan, all of Tucson; nephews, James Weber, of Portland, Ore., and Lee Weber (Yvonne), of Mason City, Iowa; as well as other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Gene was also preceded in death by one sister, Marjorie Weber.

Memorials are preferred to the Chemotherapy Department of the Mayo Health Clinic Health Systems in Fairmont.
