The upset minded No. 8-seeded Blue Earth Area Bucs took a one run lead into the sixth inning against the No. 1-seeded Fairmont Cardinals before the Cardinals rallied for a 7-4 victory on May 26 in Fairmont.
Blue Earth Area had taken the lead over the Class AA No. 8-ranked Cardinals with a four run fourth inning.
The Bucs scored their runs after Fairmont starting pitcher Luke Becker had retired the first two batters in the inning. Seth Anderson started things off with a sharp single.
Brandyn Olsen, and Jonah Pirsig followed with back-to-back walks.
Carter Hanson stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and laced a line drive single to center field which got by the center fielder allowing three runs to score and Hanson to reach third base.
A wild pitch brought home Hanson and gave the Bucs a 4-2 lead.
A solo home run by the Cardinals' Mitch Pfingsten in the bottom of the fourth inning cut the Bucs lead to 4-3.
Neither team scored in the fifth inning but the Cardinals struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go on top 7-4.
A leadoff walk and a hit batsman gave the Cardinals two runners with no outs. A Cardinal bunt resulted in a collision at first base with the baseball getting away from the Bucs' fielder. By the time the play was over two runners had scored and the batter had gained third base and the Cards had taken a 5-4 lead. A single and another error would give Fairmont two more runs.
The Bucs were retired in order in the top of the seventh inning by Becker who earned a complete-game victory.
Blue Earth Area finished the game with four runs on three hits and committed four errors.
Brandyn Olsen pitched the whole game for the Bucs giving up seven runs only one earned on seven hits, struck out six, walked two and hit one batter.
