The Bucs girls and boys cross county teams finished third and sixth respectively at the Fairmont Early-Bird Invitational held Friday, Aug. 24.

United South Central girls took home the team title in the 10-team competition, while the boys were third.

Team scores were calculated by adding up the times of their "top 5" runners. Also, all races had runners of the same grade level competing against each other.

Pacing the way for the No. 6-ranked Rebel girls in the 4,000-meter race was junior Emily Mantor, with a winning time of 14:37. She also set a new school record, bettering the old mark of 14:59 set by Cheryl Stevermer in 1995.

Freshman Bethany Koziolek crossed the finish line in 16:25.5 to place second overall, while senior teammate Hannah Goemann took fifth overall in 16:58.0.

Rounding out the Rebels' top five counting times were sophomore Amber Klein with 17:57.5 and freshman Tikvah Schwartz with a time of 18:03.1.

For the BEA girls, freshman Taylor Grandgenett was the top finisher with 17:30 and followed by teammate freshman Shayna Stevermer with an 18:29.

Juniors Sierra Halvorson, Jenna Stevermer and Anna Aukes completed the Bucs counting times with 18:57, 20:24 and 21:24, respectively.

On the boys side, sophomore Brian Remington led the Rebels with a time of 15:02, just ahead of junior teammate Logan Thomsen with 15:03.

Senior Eric Redman was clocked in 15:07, followed by junior Raul Gonzalez with 17:02 and freshman Thomas Mantor with a 17:07.

For BEA, Mike Ankeny won the sophomore 4,000-meter race with a time of 14:47.2 to earn a fourth-place overall.

Freshman Adam Buseman had a time of 16:49.7, while junior John Lee (17:40.1), freshman Zach Vaske (17:43.0) and sophomore Nick Shure (17:54.6) rounded out the team's top five runners.
