Buc defenders Gus Phillips and Greg Claeys close in an Eagle runner.

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer football team used a big running game and a stifling defense to down the Windom Eagles 39-6 in a non-conference match up at Wilson Field on Friday, Sept. 14

The Bucs blasted away in the first two quarters and put the game away by the halftime break.

The Bucs scored twice in the first quarter, both coming on runs by quarterback Kysten Zierke who ran in once from seven yards out and again from 10 yards out.

Both times the try at extra point failed and BEA led Windom 12-0 after one.

In the second quarter David Franta cut loose for a 39-yard touchdown run.

Later in the quarter, Carter Hanson peeled off a 22-yard touchdown run. And then Justin Ritter scored from three yards out.

All three second quarter running touchdowns were followed by a successful point after touchdown kick by Felix Harsheim.

That gave BEA a huge 33-0 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the Bucs scored through the air.

After forcing the Eagles to punt, Franta got another big run and the Bucs received some additional 10 yards on a penalty.

Then Zierke connected with Dallas Barslou for a 9-yard touchdown pass.

Harsheim’s kick for extra point nailed the left upright squarely and failed to go through.

BEA was up 39-0 at the end of the third quarter.

The period ended with a huge 43-yard run by Buccaneer Gus Phillips to the 15-yard line.

However, the fourth quarter started with the Bucs fumbling and the Eagles recovering the ball.

Windom moved the ball with the help of a big 62 yard run. They eventually scored their only touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run with only 2:43 left in the game.

BEA outgained Windom on the ground, 296 yards to a minus three.

While the Eagles had the one 62-yard run, most of that yardage was negated by losses and sacks from a tough Buc defense. BEA recorded seven sacks in the game, including 2 1/2 from Phillips.

Franta led the Buc ground game with 120 yards on nine carries. Hanson added 80 yards on nine attempts and Phillips had 59 yards on six tries.

Zierke carried the ball nine times for 25 yards and Ritter had four tries for 11.

Zierke was 4 of 13 for 56 yards with one TD and three interceptions.

The Eagles outgained the Bucs in the air with 90 yards on 6 of 23 passing.

Franta was also the top receiver with one catch for 22 yards.

Isaac Darrington had one pass reception for 16 yards and Barslou and Steven Plocker each had one catch for nine yards Overall, BEA had 352 yards of offense to 87 for Windom. The Bucs had 14 first downs to the Eagles six. And, BEA was 6 of 10 in third down conversions compared to Windom’s 1 of 13.

The Buc defense was spread around with four players having four tackles each and eight with three each.

The win puts the now No. 4 state-ranked Buccaneer’s record at 3-0. The Eagles dropped to 0-3.

This past Friday, Sept. 21, the Buccaneers traveled to New Ulm to take on another Eagle squad. Details on that game will be in the next Faribault County Register.

This week on Friday, Sept. 28, the Buccaneers celebrate homecoming with a match up against the Waseca Bluejays at Wilson Field.
