Three Blue Earth Area High School boys basketball players were recently announced as being named to the South Central Conference All-Conference team.

Brandyn Olsen, Luke Monson and Isaac Darrington were the three honored Buccaneers.

Brandyn Olsen

Senior guard Brandyn Olsen racked up some impressive numbers for the Bucs. He was one of only two players (Steven Plocker was the other one) who played in all 23 games the Buccaneers competed in this season.

The 6-foot-2 Olsen led the team in scoring with 307 points, an average of 13.3 per game.

He made 106 of his 234 two-point shot attempts, and 12 of his 49 3-point shots. In addition, Olsen made 59 of 84 free throw attempts for a 70 percent average.

Plus, he led the Bucs in assists with 126, and had 108 rebounds, 14 blocked shots and 36 steals.

“Brandyn is a very versatile player,” Buc head coach Randy Kuechenmeister says. “He is a very good defensive player, but he can get to the lane and score offensively as well.”

The coach added that Olsen is a very good shooter off the dribble.

Luke Monson

The 6-foot-5 Monson missed two games due to injury but still scored 295 points for the Bucs, second highest on the team. That was a 14 point per game average.

He made 99 of 183 shots from the 2-point area and 18 of 53 from 3-point land. Those combine to make him a 50 percent accuracy shooter.

From the free throw line he was 61 percent accurate, making 43 of 71 attempts.

Monson also led the teams in rebounds with 55 on offense and 108 on defense.

The junior forward also led in blocked shots with 38 and had nine steals.

“Luke has very soft hands,” Kuchenmeister says. “He is a very good scorer, and can make a nice three or two point shot. Plus he is an excellent rebounder.”

Isaac Darrington

Darrington got a late start into the season due to an injury and only played in 15 games. But he sure had an impact when he finally was able to come in and play.

The senior forward had 173 points for an 11.5 per game average. All of his scoring from the floor came from the 2-point area, where he was 68 of 118.

The 6-foot-4 Darrington was also a 48 percent shooter from the charity stripe, hitting 37 of 77 shot attempts.

“Isaac is very athletic,” the Bucs coach says. “He has very good offensive moves but can also defend. He is an excellent rebounder.”

Fairmont and St. Peter each had four players on the All-conference team, while St. James and Waseca each had two. Waseca and New Ulm each had one player on the honorable mention all-conference list.

Fairmont and St. Peter were co-champions of the SCC this past season.
