Boy linksters fall to Cards, 6th at Fairmont Invite

By Staff | May 12, 2013

The Buccaneer boys golf team hosted the Fairmont Cardinals at the Riverside Town and Country Club course last Tuesday.

While the team was consistent with the scores they shot just the day before in Fairmont, it was not enough to overcome the Cardinal’s play.

Fairmont took the meet 326 to 365.

“While we were able to shoot a very similar score to the day before, we need to set our sights on lowering that team number by a couple of strokes per guy each meet,” Coach Travis Armstrong said after the meet.

The Blue Earth Area team was led by Zach Curtis who came in with an 84 (42-42) for the 18-hole meet.

Also breaking 90 was Connor Thielfoldt who carded an 89 (45-44).

Trevor Zierke added a 95 (48-47) while Josh Anderson’s 97 (49-48) finished the team’s tally of 365.

Logan Jacobs was not far off the mark, carding a 98 (52-46) while Lane Anderson shot a 110 (59-51).

“I was happy for Zach that he shot another round in the 80s,” Armstrong says. “He was the third best golfer that day.”

The coach says the team has a full week of practice after this meet to put in some effort to shave some of the strokes each player has.

“And, amazingly, the season is wrapping up, just as it seems to be getting started,” Armstrong observes.

BEA sixth at

Fairmont Invitational

If the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys golf team would have been playing in a 9-hole meet last Monday, they would have come in with a team score 13 strokes better than any other so far this season.

But, the Bucs were in an 18-hole, seven-team Fairmont Cardinal Invitational on the Rose Lake Golf Club in Fairmont.

BEA came in with a team total 362 to take sixth place.

“We had four guys at 44 or better on that front nine,” Coach Travis Armstrong says. “Our scores are improving with the weather.”

Top performer for the Buccaneers was Zach Curtis who broke 90 and carded an 87 (40-47).

“Zach started his day with hazard trouble and carded a nine on his first hole which was No. 12 in the shotgun start,” Armstrong says. “He battled back and just missed a birdie on hole No. 9 to shoot a 40 on the front side.”

Curtis has a goal of shooting a sub-40 round this season, the coach adds, and he is closing in on it.

Trevor Zierke and Lane Anderson both came in with even 90s for the Bucs. Zierke fired a 44-46 and Anderson had a 42-48.

Connor Thielfoldt shot a 95 (43-52) to round out the team total.

Other varsity players included Logan Jacobs with a 99 (53-46) and Josh Anderson with 119 (58-61).

“We shot a 362 today, after shooting in the 390s at New Ulm a few weeks ago,” coach Armstrong says. “The boys are still not happy with their scores, which is encouraging, but, from a coaching standpoint, I am happy with their improvement. Now we need to work on our consistency over 18 holes to get those tournament totals down below 360.”

Marshall shot a 310 to claim first place honors. Fairmont was second with 317, Redwood Valley third with 330, Luverne fourth at 335, Windom fifth with 340 and Mountain Lake Area seventh with 411.
