USC boys, girls golf teams headed to State
It was a big double-double win for the United South Central girls and boys golf teams.
After blowing away the competition in the Sub-Section the week before, the Rebel boys and girls teams both won the Section 2A Golf Meet and are both advancing to the State Golf Meet this week at the Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.
“It was just great to see them both do it,” Rebel golf coach Brad Huse says. “It was a fantastic day.”
Huse says the boys team had qualified for the State Meet last year, and they were really feeling the pressure to try and return again this year.
“Now that they made it, they can relax a little and maybe they will be able to shoot well at State.”
This is the first time in USC history that both golf teams are headed to the State Golf Meet together. But, it is not unheard of in the tournament itself. At least two other schools this year are doing the same thing.
The Rebels used a big first round lead to get themselves in position for the win, the coach says.
“The boys had an 11 stroke lead after the first nine holes,” Huse says. “The girls were up by 13 strokes after nine.”
Both teams held on to a big lead through the second nine.
The USC boys ended with a score of 323, 13 strokes ahead of second place finisher Bethlehem Academy which shot 336.
In third was Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton with 348 and fourth was Martin County West with 358.
Leading the way for the Rebels was Nick Neubauer who came in with a 76 (37-39), good for a tie for second place in the Section.
Ryan Pederson shot an 81, Seth Olson an 82 and Nate Pederson an 84 to round out the Rebels’ team tally of 323.
Other golfers for the Rebel boys were Brett Ulrich with an 89 and Colbi Bullerman with a 91.
The Rebel girls came in with a team score of 381, nine strokes better than second place Sleepy Eye which carded a 390.
New Ulm Cathedral was in third with a 411 and Martin County West in with a 429 for fourth.
Ali Wood led the USC team and came in with a second place finish in the Section, carding an 88 (46-42.)
Teammate Claire Christian had the fourth best score in the Section Meet with a 91 (45-46).
Kyley Bullerman scored a 99 and Katelyn Loegering a 103 to round out the Rebels’ team tally of 381.
Other Rebels scores included Veronica Schindler with a 105 and Isabel Schindler with a 112.
Both teams will now be competing in the State Golf Meet on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
While they will be competing as a team, all the team member’s individual scores are also counted towards the individual state competition.
The boys team will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, while the girls will hit the course at noon.
Both teams then continue play on Wednesday.
