BEA finishes season strong with 2 wins

By Staff | Feb 9, 2014

Two Blue Earth Area gymnasts found their way to the top during the team’s second consecutive win.

The Buccaneers traveled to St. James on Jan. 31 for the last regular meet of the season. There BEA outscored their opponents by 11 points.

They finished with 111.68 and St. James with 100.18.

Haley Resutek and Erin Olson both beat out their competition and took the top positions in all around, as well as placing in other events.

Resutek was the highest scorer of the night, placing first in all four contests and in all around.

She finished with a 30.7 in all around; 7.85 on floor exercise, 6.95 on beam, 7.35 on bars and 8.55 on vault.

“We look forward to sending our only senior, Resutek, out with a bang at sections this year,” co-coach Merissa Lore says.

Sophomore Erin Olson worked her way up in the ranks, placing second in all around with a total of 28.55.

Olson placed in three events, as well, including; second place on floor with 7.75, second place on bars with a 6.7 and fourth on vault with an 8.1.

Melissa Hagedorn placed in two events. She came in third on floor with 7.5 and tied for fourth on beam with a 6.15.

Malorie Huber tied Hagedorn on beam for fourth place.

Briana Ziegler also placed on the beam. She tied for second with St. James’ Glenda Hector, both gymnasts receiving scores of 6.4.

St. James’ Hector and Kelli Nessler took third and fourth place respectively in all around. Hector finished with a 27.5 and Nessler with 26.575.

“We had a lot of sickness and injuries this year which was hard since we had low team numbers to start,” Lore says. “The girls did good stepping up and doing what needed to be done.”

Since it was the last regular meet of the season, it was the last chance JV had to compete.

“The junior varsity girls did really good this year. We started the year with no routines and not enough skills to fill routines to ending with most having multiple routines,” Lore adds.

And although the JV didn’t win their last meet, they did have several girls place in multiple events.

Hayley Jahnke tied for fourth on vault with a 7.2, placed fourth on bars with 3.2 and took third on floor with 5.6.

Ariana Nagel tied for third place on vault with a 7.3, placed second on bars with 3.8 and placed third on beam with 3.9.

“Many of these girls really stepped up and helped out on varsity throughout the season as well,” Lore says. ” Erica and I really enjoyed the girls and thank them for a positive experience.”

There was a varsity South Central Conference meet held in St. Peter on Friday after the Register deadline. Results will be printed in the next issue of the Faribault County Register.
