A Winnebago man appeared in Faribault County District Court last Monday regarding charges stemming from an attempted murder of a relative and domestic assault.
Joseph Conklin, 47, is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the second degree and two counts of domestic assault.
On Feb. 6, officers responded to a report of a domestic assault at a residence on Second Avenue SW in Winnebago.
When the officers arrived they saw a woman sitting on a couch in the living room with a small amount of blood on her hands, according to court documents.
When asked if she was injured, she said, "not seriously," and showed the officers a spot on her abdomen which was red with blood where the skin was broken.
The female then handed one of the officers a knife, according to the filed complaint.
She told them the accused had attempted to stab her with it and she had to fight in order to get away from him.
The officers then moved to the kitchen where they found Conklin seated on the floor. Conklin was holding a knife to his own stomach, according to the complaint. He was told several times to put the knife down.
When Conklin tensed up and started to push the knife toward himself, Chief Bob Toland instructed another deputy to tase Conklin, but Conklin ended up putting the knife down, according to the document.
Toland took a statement from the victim stating she and Conklin had been drinking. According to the female, the accused wanted more to drink and they began to argue and then it became a physical struggle.
According to the victim, Conklin told her he was going to kill her.
He then went into the living room and returned with a knife. Conklin again attacked the female, this time with the knife.
She fell backwards on the couch and in doing so she grabbed the knife and was able to get it away from Conklin.
According to the female, he then grabbed her by the throat and choked her.
The officers also observed the point of the knife was similar in size to the mark on the victims abdomen.
Judge Douglas Richards set an Omnibus hearing for Conklin on Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
