BLUE EARTH AREA SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

February 10, 2014

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of the Blue Earth Area, I.S.D #2860 was held on Monday February 10, 2014 in Blue Earth , MN.

Present were School Board members: J. Haugh, M. Eckhardt, D. Fellows, F. Bly, M. Maher and T. Cahill. Ripley was absent.

Also attending were Supt. Gough, members of the press, staff and public.

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chairperson Bly. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

On a Fellows/Maher motion the board approved the agenda. Unanimous approval.

Public input: Michelle Stindtman was present to discuss the Foreign Exchange students not being able to graduate and walk with the senior class.

On an Eckhardt/Cahill motion, the board unanimously approved the minutes from the January meeting.

The board unanimously approved seven money transfers in the amount of $1,143,718.02. Fellows/Maher motion.

Chairperson's report: Chairman Bly reminded the Board that there is an upcoming work session on March 3rd to discuss a 10 year maintenance plan and this falls upcoming referendum vote.

Superintendents Report:

Evan Gough thanked all the people that helped clean up the Little Giants water damage. Many parents of children and staff members came into clean up over the weekend. There will be a need to make up instructional time due to the many school cancelations that have already occurred this winter. We will be adding 5 minutes to the school day at the High School and be adding make up days. He also shared that he will be meeting with the Ministerial Association to discuss changing how release time is handled and the potential of moving it to late in the afternoon on Wednesday.

Committee Reports: Member Cahill shared that Spec is looking at doing a feasibility study to address their space needs. At the present time SPEC has staff in multiple buildings including space that is rented at Blue Earth Areas Winnebago site.

Principal Reports: McGuire informed everyone that February is designated as kindness month. It will be a very busy month with conferences and upcoming science fairs. Schneider stated that the One Act Play group had a great year.

Other Reports: David Sparks, Bryan Ankeny and Jennifer Berkner along with other staff members were present to discuss the 1:1 initiative. The recommendation is to place I-Pad minis in the hands of each child in the early grades and a Chromebook to every student through their senior year.

Rich Schneider along with other staff members discussed how the 8th grade move to the High School will be structured with current staff and scheduling.

Action Items:

On a Maher/Haugh motion, the Board unanimously approved a motion to spend up to $130,000, for infrastructure improvements to the wireless system, in preparation of the upcoming technology initiative.

On a Maher/Eckhardt motion, the Board unanimously approved a motion that would move the 8th grade to the High School. A new Science lab will installed due to the move to the High School. Also, the structure of the 6th and 7th grade day at the middle school may change as well.
