There is no doubt about it; it's road construction season in the Blue Earth area.

The bright orange signs reading "Detour" and "Road Closed" have made an appearance around town.

And, there are more to come.

The signs have gone up on Second Street and on Highway 169 again as well.

The $1.69 million Second Street project started last week with crews from CenterPoint Energy relocating gas lines, and a crew from Holtmeier Construction laying out the temporary water lines.

Full construction is expected to begin soon, starting at both ends of the project, with underground utility work.

The project includes new sewer and water lines, curbs, gutters and sidewalks as well as street paving.

A crew from Thate's Tree Service was expected to begin on Friday removing some of the many trees which need to be cut down to make room for the reconstructed new street, boulevard and sidewalk.

On Highway 169, the detour signs were back in place, closing the highway from the northern roundabout to the southern one at Seventh Street.

Work crews began to finish the landscaping along the sides of the highway last Tuesday. The length of time for the detour to be in place is expected to be one month.

Eventually, the highway both north and south of last summer's construction area will also be resurfaced. It is expected this will be done by closing one lane at a time and not involve a detour.

In addition to these projects, MnDOT has made an announcement that they are starting I-90 bridge reconstruction projects in the Blue Earth area on May 19. See the separate story inside this week's Register.

Also expected to begin soon is a project on Highway 109 from Easton to Wells.
