Easton Marvel Delilah Esser, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, age 90, of Easton, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014. As she wished, she passed away at home, surrounded by her family. She had been a breast cancer survivor, and she suffered from kidney failure, of which she never complained.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on May 9, 2014, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Easton. The Rev. Thomas Niehaus officiated and interment was in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells was in charge of arrangements.
Marvel was born March 29, 1924, the second oldest of five daughters, in Wells, to Walter E. and Adena (Wendt) Grunzke. As a child of the depression, she learned early in life to be cautious with money and food. Marvel lived in Waseca until she and her family moved to the Wendt farm in Dunbar Township, Faribault County. She attended Minnesota Lake High School, graduating in 1942. It was during this time she met her future husband, Duane Esser. After high school, she attended Mankato Commercial College, and then worked in the Horen and Roesler office for three years. Marvel and Duane were married on Oct. 3, 1944, at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells. After living three years in Minnesota Lake, they moved to Easton where Duane, a barber, bought the barbershop. Marvel was a homemaker, and was the proud mother of five daughters and five sons. She deeply experienced the joys and trials of motherhood. In 1970, Marvel began her career with Avon, and she very much enjoyed getting out on her route. Over the years she made many good friends of the ladies she met, and she always had time for one more cup of coffee. Marvel worked with Avon until 2013, when poor health ended her career. Marvel enjoyed coffee with friends, summer afternoons at the lake, the large family get-togethers, along with shopping with her daughters.
Happily married to her high school sweetheart of 69 years, Duane, of Easton; children, Dawn Doyle, of Easton, Diane (Earl) McCarrick, of Rochester, Dennis (Sue) Esser, of Blue Earth, Douglas (Ardie), of Minnesota Lake, Dick (Dorothy), of Kilkenny, Dirk (Lisa), of Blue Earth, Dorothy (Douglas) Wach, of Wells, Dorene (Gerry) Woodruff, of Denver, Colo., David, of Winnebago, and Dorelle (Dave) Rosenberg, of Bloomington; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; three sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
