County officials file for election

May 25, 2014
by Chuck Hunt - Register Editor (chunt@faribaultcountyregister.com) , Faribault County Register

All of the incumbents for the county offices up for election this fall want to continue in their jobs.

They each filed for re-election last Tuesday, the very, very first day they could.

County commissioner Tom Loveall (District 4) and commissioner Greg Young (District 2) have their terms expiring at the end of the year. They both filed to run for County Board again.

So did county auditor/ treasurer John Thompson, county recorder Sherry Asmus, sheriff Mike Gormley and county attorney Troy Timmerman.

The filing period for all federal, state and county offices runs from last Tuesday, May 20, through Tuesday, June 3.

As of press time for this edition of the Faribault County Register, no one other than the incumbents had filed.

There is a $50 fee for filing for a county office.

The same filing period is in effect for the Faribault County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors positions which are open. There is a $20 filing fee for that office.

More information on the SWCD positions is in a separate story in this week's Register. Faribault County District Court judge Douglas Richards has also filed locally for his state position of Seat 13 in the Fifth Judicial District.

Faribault County's two State representative positions are also up for election, and the filing period for those seats, currently held by Rep. Bob Gunther (GOP) and Rep. Shannon Savick (DFL).

The state offices open this year for election also include the governor, secretary of state, attorney general and recorder.

There is a $300 filing fee for a state office.

On the federal level, the House of Representatives seat currently held by Tim Walz (DFL) and the U.S. Senate seat held by Al Franken (DFL) are also up for election this fall.

While the federal, state and county filing period runs from May 20 to June 3, the period for some local offices doesn't happen until later this summer.

The filing period for open seats for cities, school boards and the UHD board, among others, does not begin until July 29 and closes on Aug. 12.

Mayors and many councilmen as well as school board members on both the Blue Earth Area and United South Central School Boards will have their terms up this year.
