There were new school records and multiple personal records broken at the Section 2A Championship held on May 30 at Mankato West. Along with those accomplishments, two Blue Earth Area track and field individuals and two relay teams qualified for the State Meet June 6 and 7 at Hamline University.

State qualifiers

Taylor Grandgenett will be returning to the State Meet in the 300-meter hurdles. Grandgenett finished first (45.79). Last year, Grandgenett became the first-ever female State track and field Champion in Blue Earth history; she won the 300-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 45.03.

"Taylor had some competition in the 300-meter hurdles, but she took control of the race early and hung on for a quality win," Plocker says.

Karli Olsen finished second in the 400-meter dash (59.84). The last two years, Olsen missed out on the State Meet with two third-place finishes. Coach Tom Plocker also points out it was the first time Olsen completed the 400-meter dash in under 60 seconds, which propelled her to the State Meet for the first time in an individual event.

The 4 x 200-meter relay team took first place and will also be heading to the State Meet. The team, consisted of Skylee Bell (26.5), Shayna Stevermer (26.5), Anne Franta (26.6) and Miranda Johnson (27.1), finished in 1:46.66, which was a new school record.

"Each raced really tough, had quality handoffs and Anne Franta just refused to lose on the anchor leg," he explains.

The 4 x 400-meter relay team consisting of Grandgenett (59.9), Franta (60.6), Shayna Stevermer (62.0) and Karli Olsen (60.1) also took first with an overall time of 4:02.89.

"Our 4 x 400 girls relay team were a big favorite and they came through with another quality time," Plocker says. "Sometimes at the end of a hot meet like that it's hard to get a solid time, but they did."

Other results

Bell set a new personal and school record in the long jump, registering a third place finish with her leap of 16-7 1/2.

The 4 x 100-meter relay team consisting of Paige Darrington, Miranda Johnson, Franta and Bell, also took third with an overall time of 1:46.66.
