The Blue Earth Pirates shook off the rust from not playing in three days and defeated the Mankato Cubs, 5-1 in nine innings last Wednesday night.

Lee Hodges took the mound and managed to only give up one earned run in five innings of work. He had eight strikeouts as well.

Aaron Wendt redeemed himself from his performance against Wells last week by giving up no runs and striking out six batters in four innings of relief work.

"Wendt was awesome and rebounded great," Hodges says.

Wendt also contributed two RBI and went 1 for 4 at the plate.

TJ Schmidtke was 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI.

Cody Sukalski went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Zach Dahl contributed the other RBI.

The Pirates (9-2) scored one run in the first inning and another in the fourth.

The Cubs cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the fifth frame.

But, the Pirates added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to close out the game.

"I always have trouble putting together the order because everyone is capable of performing on any given night," Hodges explains. "I guess it's a good problem to have."

Hodges says the squad this year is doing so well because of the total team effort.

"There really isn't any one player who always stands out," he says. "We play team defense and work together as one unit."

Pirates 3, Reds 1

Behind a complete game from Brandyn Olsen, the Blue Earth Pirates defeated the New Richland Reds 3-1 last Sunday night.

It wasn't the offensive attack that fans are getting used to, but in the end, the Pirates earned their seventh win of the season.

On a night where the Pirates collected their seventh win, they finished with seven hits.

Bob Olson was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Christian Haugh was 1 for 3 with a double and also had an RBI.

Lee Hodges had the other RBI for the Pirates. He hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but finished the game 0 for 3.

Wildcats 10, Pirates 8

The Blue Earth Pirates had 15 hits, but it was not enough as they fell to the Wells Wildcats for the second time this season.

The Wildcats defeated the Pirates 10-8 on June 27 in 11 innings.

Aaron Wendt pitched four innings, gave up seven earned runs, allowed 10 hits and walked two batters.

"I've never seen Aaron get hit so hard," Hodges says. "He was just leaving balls up in the strike zone."

According to Hodges, Cody Sukalski came in during the fifth inning to relieve Wendt and held the Wildcats scoreless until the top of the 11th inning.

Leading the Pirates was Brandyn Olsen, who finished the game 4 for 4 with a double and three RBI.

Wendt was 4 for 6 with two doubles.
