WBE finds their offensive stride in Districts play

The Winnebago-Blue Earth (WBE) Legion baseball team chose the right time to have their bats come alive.

WBE defeated Luverne 11-3 on Sunday, July 20, in the third round of the District Tournament.

They put up eight runs in the first two innings.

"We really jumped out to an early lead," coach Steve Sonnicksen explained. "Luverne is a real quality team, but we just brought our bats and continued to perform well."

Brandyn Olsen pitched for WBE and gave up three runs, nine hits and struck out seven batters.

WBE added to their lead in the sixth with a deep liner David Franta crushed off the fence, which brought in two more runs.

"David has been doing great for us," Sonnicksen says. "It was really close to being a grand slam."

Christian Haugh and Alex Stewart led WBE with two hits a piece.

Seth Anderson scored three runs for WBE.

WBE will face the winner of the Luverne and St. James matchup.

According to Sonnicksen, if Luverne wins, then WBE will be guaranteed a bid into the State Tournament.

"As far as I know, since Luverne is hosting the State Tournament, they automatically get a bid, which would mean we would, too," he says.

But, if St. James advances, they would have to beat WBE twice to become District Champions.

"We're just playing really good baseball right now and are taking things one game at a time," Sonnicksen says.

The game was played after the Register deadline. Results will be in the next Faribault County Register.

WBE 15 St. James 6

WBE opened up District play with a bang literally.

After giving up three first inning runs to familiar foe St. James, WBE answered with multiple runs of their own. Alan Davids, Seth Anderson and David Franta helped WBE to get off to their quick start with three home runs, giving WBE an 8-3 lead after the first inning.

WBE advanced to the second round due to Redwood Falls having to withdraw from the District Tournament.

Their second round matchup ended with a 15-6 thrashing of St. James last Saturday.

However, St. James managed to keep the game close early on with a three-run homer of their own in the second inning.

Alan Davids took the mound for WBE and finished seven innings with eight strikeouts, allowing nine hits and six runs.

"Alan really started to settle down after the first two innings," Sonnicksen says. "He slowed down and really got into a good groove on the mound."

WBE added to their lead and scored six more runs in the third inning, making the score 14-6.

They had 13 hits including three home runs and three doubles.

WBE was led by Anderson, who was 3 for 4 at the plate.

Luke Schavey, Matthew Bell and Davids all recorded multiple hits, too.

Franta scored four runs.
