Buc girls win 2, lose 1

By Staff | Jan 18, 2015

The Bucs could not muster up enough energy to take a win against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown last Tuesday.

BEA scored 21 points in the first half and 20 in the second but that was nothing compared to their opponents who racked up 31 points in the top of the game and another 31 to win it all.

The final score of 62-41 gave the Bucs a loss their fourth of the season.

However, Buc coach Al Cue says the girls will have to just bounce back and use this game as a chance for growth.

“We will learn from this game and improve in the coming weeks,”?he said.

Their last couple of games showed off the Bucs’ speed and defense which resulted in some well-played games. However, that is just what the girls lacked against WEM.

“Our girls played very flat with a lack of energy,” Cue said. “We had really been playing solid defense coming into this game, but were outplayed badly in this one.”

The coach continues by giving the opposing team credit for a good game.

“They ran their sets well and made their shots,” Cue added.

The Bucs scored a total of 41 points with 11 of those scored from foul shots, 12 from 3-pointers and 18 from 2-point baskets.

Kaitlyn Olsen led the Bucs in scoring, bringing in a total of 10 points. She had two 2-pointers and two 3-pointers. Olsen also had six rebounds and three steals.

Sam Barslou racked up seven points for the Bucs, shooting a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line and sinking one 3-pointer.

Paige Darrington snagged seven rebounds and scored two points.

The Bucs had a total of 32 rebounds, 11 steals and six assists.

They were 9 of 47 with their 2-pointers, 4 of 16 from behind the arc and 11 of 14 from the foul line.

The Bucs played again on Friday, Jan. 16 against New Ulm at BEA. However, that took place after the Faribault County Register deadline, and results will be featured in the next issue.

BEA 60, HL-O 56

A high-scoring, yet close game ended in another win for the Buccaneers.

Blue Earth Area girls basketball team hosted Heron Lake-Okabena for a make up game which was rescheduled from Jan. 5.

The first half left the outcome of the game in either team’s hands as the scoreboard read 23-22 when the buzzer sounded. The Bucs had the lead and hoped it would continue to the end.

“They played a very solid game,”?coach Al Cue said. “A lot of girls played and many of them contributed positively.”

But in the second half, the two teams fought it out until the very end, remaining closely matched throughout.

“The second half was one of our best halves of the season,”?said Cue.

HLO scored an additional 33 points in the bottom half of the game.

BEA?scored 38 during the last half which brought their final score to 60, trumping their opponents final score of 56.

Karli Olsen was the top scorer for BEA,?bringing in a total of 15 points. Those points came in the form of two 2-pointers, three of six 3-point shots and a perfect two for two at the free-throw line.

Taylor Grandgenett brought in 11 points for the maroon and gold, scoring seven of those from foul shots.

Paige?Darrington, continuing her reputation of being quick and aggressive under the basket, tallied 13 of the Bucs’ 28 rebounds. She also sank three 2-point shots and four free-throw shots for a total of 10 points.

BEA 36, St. James 33

The Blue Earth Area girls basketball team was scheduled to travel to St. James on Thursday, Jan. 8. However, due to weather, that game was rescheduled.

The Buccaneers were able to make up the game on the next day, Friday, Jan. 9.

The maroon and gold scored with ease in the first half, tallying 22 points while their opponents were not far behind with 13 in the first.

The teams seemed to flip flop in the second half, though, and the Saints scored 20 points while the Bucs only brought in 14.

But, that was plenty for BEA?as they pulled out a 3-point win and defeated the Saints, 36-33.

The Bucs seemed to find most of their points at the free-throw line, scoring 10 of 36 points there.

Taylor Grandgenett was responsible for half of the free-throw points made, sinking five of her eight shots from the foul line. She also had three steals and three assists and sank one shot from the field for a total of seven points scored.

However, Kaitlyn Olsen racked up a total of 10 points for BEA. Those points came in the form of two 3-pointers and two 2-pointers. Olsen also had three rebounds and five steals.

Karli Olsen wasn’t far behind, either, as she accounted for nine of the Bucs’ points. She scored two 2-point shots and one from behind the arc.

The Bucs had a total of 32 rebounds; Paige Darrington snagged 10 of those.

This win put their season record at seven wins and three losses and seemed to set the tone for the rest of the games during the following week.
