Buc girls lose 1, win 2

By Staff | Feb 2, 2015

The girls kept it close, against the top team in the conference.

Blue Earth Area hosted the Waseca Bluejays last Thursday night for a Big South competition.

The maroon and gold did what they could to keep the Bluejays from scoring, however, they had a hard time sinking baskets themselves.

“I’m proud of the way the girls battled in this game,”?coach Al Cue said. “Waseca is the top team in the conference.”

Holding true to the way they have been playing all season, the Bluejays kicked off the scoring by sinking a shot from behind the arc and after that the teams battled back and forth throughout the rest of the game.

When the first half ended the score ended in Waseca’s favor 18-14.

The Buccaneers kept their opponents from getting too far ahead allowing them to score only 20 more points in the second half.

Unfortunately the Bucs’ 13 additional points in the second were not enough to pull out a win and Waseca claimed the victory, 38-27.

“We really defended them well and held them well below their season scoring average,” Cue said. “But, most girls had a tough night shooting the ball.”

Bringing in the most points for the maroon and gold was Caitlin Rorman. She scored nine points; sinking two free-throws, one 3-pointer and was 2 for 2 with her 2-point shots.

Paige Darrington also brought in a portion of the Bucs’ points. She sank three 2-pointers and two free-throws for a total of eight points.

Darrington also grabbed 13 rebounds and five steals.

Shayna Stevermer also brought in four points for the Bucs and had three rebounds.

As a team, the Bucs had 24 rebounds, nine steals and six assists.

Despite their first loss of the week last week, the Bucs’ coach is confident the girls will bounce back for their next matchup.

“We will regroup and be ready to go for the upcoming games,” he said.

The Buc girls will play again in Jackson County Central on Monday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. Results from that game will be featured in the next issue of the Faribault County Register.

BEA 50, LSH 29

The Blue Earth Area girls stood up to the Giants and walked away with a 50-29 win.

The Buccaneers traveled to Le Sueur-Henderson for a non-conference competition last Tuesday night.

“Overall, it was a nice game for the Bucs,” coach Al Cue said.

The maroon and gold got things going right away in the first half. However, the Giants weren’t going to be left in the dust.

The Bucs ended the beginning of the game with a 21-17 lead; which would help them as they started off the bottom half of the matchup.

“We had a few breakdowns defensively in the first half and gave up some open threes,”?Cue said.

However, going into the second half, the girls were motivated and they ran away with the game.

They racked up an additional 29 points while the Giants were only able to bring in 12 more, giving the maroon and gold another win, 50-29.

“Offensively, we struggled at times, but got things going well for a stretch in the second half,” Cue added. “We guarded them much better in the second half.”

Sam Barslou had a stand out game leading her team in scoring.

“She really shot the ball well, making five threes,” Cue said.

Barslou brought in a total of 17 points; sinking 5 of 7 3-point shots and was 2 for 2 at the free-throw line. She also had two rebounds, two steals and four assists.

Paige Darrington again led the maroon in gold when it came to rebounds. She grabbed nine of the Bucs’ 26 rebounds.

Darrington also tallied seven points by way of two 2-pointers and three free-throws.

Other scorers for the Bucs included Caitlyn Rorman, Shayna Stevermer and Karli Olsen all scoring six points each.

The Bucs were 11 for 33 with 2-pointers, 7 for 17 from behind the arc and sank 7 of 10 free-throw shots.

The Bucs’ win against LSH bumped their record to 4-3 in the Big South and 11-5 overall record for the season.

BEA 36, Fairmont 35

It was a nail-biter, but the Buccaneers took a win from the Cardinals by just one point.

Blue Earth Area hosted a double header with the Fairmont boys and girls basketball teams. Although the BEA boys team lost, the girls came out with a victory.

The last time the maroon and gold played the Cards, they suffered a loss in the last minutes of the game. Fortunately, the table turned in the Bucs’ favor this time.

“It was good to hold on for the win after letting the first game with them slip away in the last minute,” coach Al Cue said.

The game could have ended up in either team’s favor. The first half put the Bucs in a four-point lead with the scoreboard reading 17-13 when the first half buzzer sounded.

Then, Fairmont came back in the bottom half determined to push out the Bucs. They scored an additional 22 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.

The maroon and gold roped in 19 more points for themselves which was just what they needed to defeat the Cardinals.

“We struggled scoring, but were able to score just enough,” Cue added.

The Bucs’ strength came defensively rather than offensively.

“Our zones really bottled up Fairmont’s inside game, and we were able cover their perimeter shooters pretty well,” Cue said.

Two maroon and gold players stood out in the stats for the rival matchup against Fairmont.

“Taylor (Grandgennett) did a great job handling the ball for us and getting the ball up the floor,” Cue said. “And, Paige (Darrington) had another huge night for us on the boards.”

Grandgennett led the team in scoring and brought in a total of 13 points. She was 4 for 8 with 2-point shots and 5 for 7 from the free-throw line.

She also had two rebounds and three steals.

Darrington was not far behind in scoring as she also added 12 points to the Bucs’ total. She sank three 2-pointers and six free-throws.

She led the team when it came to rebounds racking up more than half of the team’s total. She grabbed 17 rebounds while BEA?had a total of 31.

Karli Olson also brought in six points for the maroon and gold and two rebounds and two steals.
