Bucs fall to the JCC Huskies, 49-20

By Staff | Feb 2, 2015

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team suffered an uncharacteristic loss last Tuesday when they hosted the Jackson County Central Huskies.

“They are tough competition,” Buc head coach Randy Wirtjes said. “They won the close matches and the ones I figured they would.”

The Huskies took down the Bucs by a score of 49-20.

“That pretty much gives them the No. 1 seed in the section,” Wirtjes says. “It should drop us to No. 2 and New Richland to No. 3.”

The Bucs fell to the Huskies last season in the section championship match.

“We have to find a way to stay off our backs when we wrestle Jackson,” Wirtjes says. “If we expect to compete with them.”

The Bucs also had another wrestler, Jordan Stelter, out with an injury for the match.

Tuesday night the first match set the tone for the evening when the Bucs’ 106-pounder, Dalton Nagel, lost a close match, 8-6, to Justin Heckard.

Then Adam Legred lost a major decision, 15-4, to JCC’s Jacob Tvinnereim at 113 pounds to put the Bucs behind 7-0.

Cole Klinkner put BEA on the board with a major decision at 120 pounds, defeating Zach Poleart 12-2. The Bucs trailed 7-4.

Camden Bowers was pinned by Dalton Wagner at 126 pounds, but Zach Buseman scored a 17-5 major decision over Scott Ringquist at 132 to put the score at 13-8 in favor of JCC.

The two teams traded pins at the next two weights.

The Bucs’ Rylee McGuire was pinned by Ryker VanderWoude at 138 pounds, but BEA’s Mike Ankeny pinned Alec Fischer at 145 pounds in just 37 seconds.

The score was close at 19-14 in favor of JCC.

However, the Huskies blew the match wide open by winning the next six matches, four of them by falls.

Roger Ziegler lost 10-5 to Bryce Reetz at 152 pounds and Tannor Wolf lost 5-2 to Luke Pygman at 160.

Then Jesus Quintero was pinned by Paden Moore at 170 pounds, Jacob Johnson was pinned by Luke Norland at 182, Lane Anderson was pinned by Keegan Moore at 195 and Jared Armon was pinned by Justin Tirevold at 220.

That gave the Huskies a huge 49-14 lead.

“Those three, Daden and Keegan Moore and Norland, are their three horses,” Wirtjes says. “They can go against anyone in the state and win. But, we need to take them at some of the other weights.”

The Bucs finally ended the string of losses when Martin Granados pinned Nate Horn in just 52 seconds in the 285-pound bout.

The Bucs wrestled at St. James on Friday, Jan. 30, after the deadline for this week’s Faribault County Register. Details will be included in the next edition.
