State Bound!

By Staff | Feb 6, 2015

One Blue Earth Area High School winter sport athlete has already qualified to move on to the State Tournament in his sport.

Senior Nick Lein and his Lake Crystal Valley alpine ski team took second place at the Section 6 Alpine Ski Meet on Tuesday, Feb. 3, and are headed to the State Alpine Ski Meet this week.

LCV scored 321 points and shocked several of the larger Twin Cities area teams by placing second out of the 21 teams competing at the section.

Edina took the top spot with 350 points and will also head to state.

Lein did not have one of his better scores, faltering a little bit in his first run down the slope, but still came in 18th out of the 107 male skiers at the meet.

His first run was at a time of 26.51, but his second run down the slopes at Buck Hill in Burnsville was clocked at 23.79. That gave him a 50.30 total.

One of Lein’s teammates, Alex Roesler, took 10th place with a run of 48.94. Drew Korteum was 21st with 50.67, Jake Cole was 34th with 52.62 and Michael Larson was 59th with a run of 58.32.

All of the team members will also be competing as individuals at the State Alpine Ski Meet, as well as competing as a team.

The State Meet is Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Giants Ridge near Biwabik.

The team travels there on Monday night, spends Tuesday practicing, then competes all day on Wednesday.

Unlike other sports, alpine skiing is not broken down into different classes for large or small schools, as all teams compete in one class.

There are four sections in the state for skiing, with the top two teams moving on to state, along with the top 10 skiers not on the first or second place teams.

The LCV girls team finished 13th out of the 20 teams at the Section Ski Meet with a score of 200.

LCV team members come from BEA, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, Maple River, Nicollet and Waseca high schools.
