Buccaneer wrestlers pin the Saints

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team scored early and often on their way to an impressive 54-18 win over the St. James Saints on Friday, Jan. 30.

The Bucs scored a win by a pin in seven of the 14 matches.

Dalton Nagel got things started for the Bucs when he won by an 8-4 decision over Sam Kulseth at 106 pounds.

Then Adam Legred pinned Nelson Cuellar at 113 pounds, Cole Klinkner pinned Cole Durheim in 39 seconds at 120 and Camden Bowers won by a fall at 126 over Angle Zamarripa.

That put the maroon and gold ahead by 21-0.

BEA’s Rylee McGuire was pinned in the last minute by Jesus Vidales at 132 points to give St. James their first points.

But, BEA’s Zach Buseman won 5-2 over Joe Dominguez at 138 pounds and Mike Ankeny scored a pin at 145 over Tyler Westman.

Now the score stood at 30-6 in favor of the Bucs.

Tannor Wolf suffered a close 7-6 loss to St. James’ Josh Stordalen at 152 pounds and the Saints Jessie Carlson pinned Buccaneer Roger Ziegler at 160 to cut BEA’s lead to 30-15.

However, the Buccaneers gained 18 points in the next three bouts.

Jesus Quintero got a pin over Ruben Suarez at 170 pounds, Jacob Johnson won by forfeit at 182 and Trevor Oppedal stuck Ethan Stick at 195 pounds.

The score was now 48-15 in favor of BEA.

Jared Armon lost a big battle at 220 pounds to Colin Hoppe. The match was tied at 5-5 after regulation and Hoppe won 2-0 in the overtime period.

The Bucs’ Martin Granados Jr. came through with a pin at 285 pounds over Andrew Kinnetz to put the final touches on the 54-18 win.

The Bucs took on the Jackson County Central Huskies in Jackson on Saturday, Feb. 7, after the deadline for this week’s edition. The results will be included in the next Faribault County Register.

This week the Buccaneers will be participating in the Section Team Wrestling Tournament on Thursday, in Blue Earth, and again on Saturday in Wells at United South Central High School.
