Bucs fall to St. Peter
The Buccaneer boys struggled against the Martin County West Mavericks last Tuesday night in a non-conference home game; the Bucs ended the evening with a 43-point loss, 75-32.
The Bucs boys basketball team was no match for MCW’s Richard Eckmann, who single-handedly scored 21 points for the away team, making 4 of 5 attempted 3-pointers in addition to 100 percent of his attempted free throws, 1 of 1, and 2-pointers, 4 of 4.
Mavericks No. 1, Wesley Cook, contributed 13 points to the final score as he sank 3 of 5 threes and 2 of 3 twos.
The Bucs scored 13 of 43 attempted field goals and only 2 of 17 attempted 3-pointers. At the same time, the Mavericks’ score soared past that of the Bucs’ within the first quarter of the game.
Both teams rotated players in and out of the game, but Bucs’ head coach Seth Anderson had no choice but to put his starters back in the game with only a few minutes left on the clock.
The Bucs trailed the Mavericks for the duration of the game, but by the beginning of the second half, Cook drained his last 3-pointer of the evening and put his team ahead of the Bucs by 23 points.
That said, the Bucs did seem to get a second wind after halftime as their defensive tactics proved that their heads were still in the game.
Bucs No. 11, Derek Johnson, missed a couple of 2-pointers during the second half, but he also tallied three rebounds and two assists.
However, Bailey Olson pulled through as the top contributer to the Bucs’ score, adding 13 points to their final score of 32.
Johnson earned eight points for the Bucs and led his team in terms of rebounds, recovering 5 of 16 for the night.
Windom 69, BEA 53
In their only away game for the week, the Bucs traveled to Windom last Saturday for a non-conference game against the Windom Eagles.
The Eagles soared into the lead and closed the game with a 16-point win, 69-53.
Unfortunately, the writers at the Faribault County Register were unable to obtain a copy of the stats for this game.
St. Peter 65, BEA 48
The crowd went wild as the Blue Earth Area boys basketball team jogged off the court during halftime last Friday night.
The Bucs were ahead of the St. Peter Saints by eight points by the end of the first half of their home, conference game, but as the Saints gained momentum in the second half, the Bucs fell to the Saints, 65-48.
With a strong start to supplement their excellent scoring, the Bucs shot past the Saints near the middle of the first half as Bailey Olson racked up 17 points while Johnson covered both offense and defense, catching two steals and two assists for the Bucs.
During the second half of the game, the Saints fared a bit better than they had during the first. Colton Lusty, No. 42 for the Saints, shot two 3-pointers right away in the first half.
Leeb was the second highest scorer for the Saints, as No. 32, Jordein Marquette, took home 11 points, six of which were one-point free throw shots.
Leeb earned 10 points, half of which consisted of 2- and 3-point shots.
One of BEA’s players did outshine the Saints’ lead scorer for the night Olson brought in a considerable 28 points for the Bucs with six 2-pointers and 12 field goals.
BEA’s Tyler Hannaman (No. 3) added nine points to the final score, as he made the only two threes for the Bucs that evening.
The Bucs ended the game strong with three 2-pointers, shot by Olson and Johnson, but as the Bucs committed five fouls near the end of the game, the Saints’ Marquette ended the game with four successful free throws, bringing the final score to 65-48.
The Buc boys played against the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers last Thursday night at the Blue Earth Area High School; however, we were unable to obtain the stats before this week’s Faribault County Register was sent to print.
We will have full coverage of that game in next week’s issue.
