Bucs down Cardinals, 43-39

By Staff | Feb 16, 2015

Despite a recent loss to St. Peter, the Buccaneers dusted themselves off and tallied a win against Luverne.

The maroon and gold struggled back and forth with the Cardinals for a bit during the game, but they earned a 43-39 win by the end.

“It wasn’t a very pretty game, but the girls worked their way to another victory,”?Buc coach Al Cue said.

If the score at the end of the first half of the game was any indicator of the result, the win could have fallen in anyone’s favor.

The Bucs were actually behind in the first half with a score of 19-16. However, they took it upon themselves to score 27 more points in the end of the game, which seemed to be enough, as the Cards only brought in 20 more.

“Scoring was a struggle, especially in the first half,”?Cue added. “But, we shot free throws well and that made the difference.”

The Bucs sank 10 of 14 of their free-throw attempts. Paige Darrington scored four of the 10 foul shots made.

BEA, while successful with free throws, didn’t have as much luck with their attempts from the field. As a team, they were 12 for 35 from the 2-point range and 3 for 8 from behind the arc.

Karli Olsen led the team in scoring tallying a total of 12 points. She was 2 for 5 with her 2-point shots and was 2 for 5 for 3-pointers. She also scored two free-throws.

Caitlin Rorman was 2 for 7 shooting 2-pointers, 1 for 3 from behind the arc and was 2 for 2 with her free-throw attempts. Rorman also had three rebounds.

Paige Darrington again led the team in rebounds grabbing nine of the team’s 30. She also scored eight points; two 2-pointers and 4 of 5 shots from the line.

Shayna Stevermer, Taylor Grandgenett, and Natali Fellows all brought in 4 points each.

The Bucs played on Friday in Blue Earth against St. James. That game took place after the Faribault County Register deadline and results will be featured in the next issue.

St. Peter 56, BEA 42

The Buccaneers were strong in the first half but just couldn’t come out with a win last Friday against St. Peter.

The girls fell 56-42 to the Saints, despite ending the first half just one point away from the opposing team.

“The girls played a very nice first half, overall,”?coach Al Cue said. “We were unable to carry that through the game.”

The first half ended 27-26 in the St. Peter’s favor. The maroon and gold scored 16 more points in the second half which did not compare to the Saints scoring an additional 29 points in the bottom half.

“In the last eight minutes, we let St. Peter get away from us,”?Cue said.

Karli Olsen and Sam Barslou led the team in scoring by bringing in 11 points each.

Caitlin Rorman and Taylor Grandgenett both scored seven points each.
