Bucs down the Cards in a 49-45 nail-biter
The Buccaneers girls basketball team suffered their first loss of the season after a three-win streak.
Blue Earth Area traveled to take on Granada-Huntley-East Chain-Truman last Tuesday night where they fell behind and lost the game 45-37.
“Defensively, we played a pretty good game. Offensively, we really struggled, partly due to good defense by GHEC-T and partly due to poor shooting,”?Buc coach Al Cue said.
The game started out close and the maroon and gold ended the first half just two points behind their opponents.
Going into the second half, it could have been anyone’s game. However, it was GHEC-T who pulled ahead, scoring 24 more points to tally a total of 45 in the game.
The Bucs scored 18 additional points in the second half but it wasn’t enough to come out on top, ending with a game total of 37 points.
This loss was the first one of the season for the Buccaneers and coach Cue hopes they can move forward.
“Hopefully, we will bounce back quickly,”?he said.

Karli Olsen was next in line sinking shots to add up to eight points. She also had five rebounds.

BEA 49, Fairmont 45
It was a nail biter last week when the Buccaneers hosted the Fairmont Cardinals in a back and forth contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The game started out with the maroon and gold pulling into the lead and only allowing their opponents within an arms reach.
However, the Cards managed to tie things up from time to time during the first half.
By the time the buzzer sounded, the Bucs were able to finish the first half with a six point lead over their opponents.
“The girls played a very solid first half,”?coach Al Cue said.
Going into the second half the scoreboard read 23-17 with the Buccaneers having the upper hand.
In fact, they stayed ahead early in the second half.
“They were very good early in the second half on both ends of the floor,”?the Buc coach added.
However, the Bucs ran into a couple rough spots in their scoring and the Cards managed to sneak ahead of the home team.
“Unfortunately we hit a scoring drought and let Fairmont come back and actually take the lead,”?Cue said.
It was in the last moments of the game that the two teams really decided to make things interesting.
With Fairmont in the lead and the Bucs close behind, it was only going to take a couple of points to tie the game up or to determine a winner.
“We finished very well and shot free throws well in the last two minutes,”?Cue said.
And it was those free throws in the last moments of the game that pushed the Bucs ahead for the win, 49-45.
Karli Olsen led the team in scoring, tallying 11 points for the maroon and gold. She also came out on top when it came to grabbing rebounds, racking up a total of seven.
Taylor Grandgenett wasn’t too far behind as she acquired a total of 10 points in the Bucs showdown against the Cards.
Sam Barslou scored nine points and Caitlin Rorman tallied seven points.
Paige Darrington grabbed a total of six rebounds and scored three points for BEA.
Shayna Stevermer also got under the basket and grabbed five rebounds. She also scored three points.
Anne Franta and Samantha Ripley each scored two points.
