The Blue Earth City Council chose Paula Kelly to serve on the council to replace Rick Scholtes in Ward 3. The vote was 3-2 with Councilman Glenn Gaylord and Mayor Rob Hammond voting no.

Kelly was one of five applicants for the position who were interviewed at Monday night’s regular council meeting. A sixth applicant, Todd Heenan, withdrew his name from consideration before the meeting.

Kelly has lived in Blue Earth since 1970 and in Ward 3 since 1984. She has been employed as an LPN at United Hospital District since 1979.

In a discussion before the vote, Mayor Hammond expressed support for applicant John Gartzke, while Councilman Gaylord spoke in favor of Dan Warner. Rhonda Gustafson and Gary Meyer were the other two applicants.

Scholtes resigned from is council position when he moved from Ward 3 to Ward 1. Kelly was one of two people who ran against Scholtes in the last election.

She will serve on the council until January, 2011, unless she files and is elected in November.
