Strong and damaging thunderstorms hit Faribault County on Thursday night. Most of the damage was in the Kiester area, where a tornado was sighted. Trees were down throughout the town of Kiester, and the city was closed off by law enforcement officers during the night. Power was off until Friday morning. Mayor Roger Oldfather says the cleanup started immediately, but that trees and branches were down all over the city. The home of Dale and Janet Garvick was heavily damaged, with the roof ripped off, and the attached garage destroyed. Other buildings, including the machine shed were also hit hard. A grain bin was blown across the yard and across the road and crumpled. The Garvicks were not at home at the time and no injuries in the county were reported.

Sheriff Mike Gormley says spotters were out all night, and the sirens sounded in Blue Earth and Kiester and other communities.
