Blasted by the blizzard

Emergency response personnel help accident victims on I-90 during the blizzard.

A major winter snowstorm hit the the entire midwest on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, including the Faribault County area.

At least nine inches of snow fell in the local area, with winds hitting 40 miles per hour on Wednesday.

With advanced warning, most local residents were prepared for the storm. Stores were very busy on Tuesday, as shoppers loaded up with supplies to wait out the storm.

The storm started on Tuesday afternoon, and schools in the Faribault County area let out early. Blue Earth Area Schools were dismissed by 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

There was no school on Wednesday. Many businesses were also closed for the day.

Dozens of events were cancelled or postponed, including all of the sports events scheduled for Tuesday night. BEA gymnastics, wrestling and both basketball teams had been set for games or matches on Tuesday.

The BEA gymnastics meet against Worthington is rescheduled for Jan. 7 in Winnebago. The wrestling meet at Jackson is rescheduled for Jan. 21.

The BEA girls basketball game versus Waseca is rescheduled for Jan. 8 in Blue Earth. The boys basketball game in Waseca will be held on Jan. 11.

Snow plows for the cities, county and state were out on the roads on Wednesday, but Minnesota Department of Transportation had advised no travel on Tuesday night and Wednesday all day.
