BEA board may cut, use more reserves
The hits just keep on coming.
After getting an update on the current 2010 budget at their last meeting – which showed digging into the reserves by $575,000 – the Blue Earth Area School Board received more dismal news at a recent work session.
They will have to go into their reserves again for 2011.
Superintendent Dale Brandsoy presented the first preliminary budget forecasts for next year at the work session on March 4.
Brandsoy presented a list of potential cuts which totaled $372,164. Most of the cuts involved staff terminations, retirements and revised assignments.
But the 2011 budget will need to be reduced more.
Brandsoy says a budgeted amount for future purchase of a new bus, $120,000, would be removed from the budget, if the board accepts the proposed reductions. That totals $492,164 in cuts. However, there would still be a deficit in next year’s budget of $301,685, even with the nearly half million in reductions.
That $301,000 will have to come out of the district’s reserves, which currently stand at $4.4 million.
