A Fitting Salute
The Blue Earth VFW and the Blue Earth American Legion Posts held the Memorial Day Program on May 30. The ceremony held at Memorial Square in Riverside Cemetery offered many traditional elements.
Aaron Evenson from Youth for Christ gave the invocation. The Blue Earth Area High School Band performed the, “Star Spangled Banner” and offered a medley of songs to honor the separate branches of the military, through the “Veteran’s Salute.”
Speakers included: Collin Nienhaus reading the Gettysburg Address, John Huisman reciting General Logan’s Orders and Madeline McDonald discussing the history of Civil War Veteran James Mead.
Boy Scouts placed wreaths on crosses to honor the conflicts veterans have been involved in, while the Girl Scouts strewed flowers in memory of those who were lost at sea or missing in action.
A rifle salute and the playing of taps by Colan Surratt and Nick Beattie ended the service.
