Future of liquor in Wells debated

Wells City Council members discussed the fate of the municipal liquor store during a regular meeting held Monday night.

Because the city-operated business has posted a net loss in two of the last three years, a public hearing was required under state law.

“We have brought in more money the past two years, but the costs keep going up,” says City Administrator Jeremy Germann.

“We’re on pace to bring in more money than we ever have,” he adds.

Last year, gross sales for the off-sale were about $600,000 and $150,000 for on-sale.

But, this year’s profit picture doesn’t look any better.

Germann told the council that with the two busiest months of the year left the business is still projecting a loss of $25,000.

Resident Bob Schultz asked the council what is being done to make the business more profitable.
