BE Council says building unsafe

This building, known as the Avalon Center, will be the subject of a public hearing on May 31 at 5:05 p.m.

Just after they moved their June meeting date to May, the Blue Earth City Council loaded that meeting agenda with several public hearings.

At last Monday’s meeting, the council learned that several members could not make the June 4 regular meeting.

Mayor Rob Hammond proposed moving the meeting to Thursday, May 31, and the rest of the council agreed.

As Monday’s meeting progressed, the council added several items to the May 31 agenda.

One is a public hearing on a building deemed to be in hazardous condition.

The building, located at 119 N. Main, and known as the Avalon Building, failed to pass an engineer’s inspection.

In order to move forward with an abatement order, city attorney David Frundt told the council a public hearing needs to be held.

Three other buildings, at the corner of Seventh and Main, were found not to be in as bad condition.

However, Frundt told the council there is a garbage issue at a residence in Blue Earth that is listed as a public nuisance, and he wants to add that as an item at the hearing also.

The hearing will be at 5:05 p.m. on Thursday, May 31 as part of the next council meeting.

The council also will hold a public hearing on on the new zoning ordinance on that date as well.

In addition, the council voted at Monday’s meeting to sell two pieces of city-owned property.

One is located south of the Subway restaurant on Highway 169, and has been used as a golf driving range. The other is located near the Blue Earth Area High School’s Wilson Field.

The vote of the council was to put both pieces of land out for bids and open the bids at 4 p.m. on June 18.

Council members asked about utilities being available at the Highway 169 property and were told they were not in place.

Councilman Glenn Gaylord suggested selling the property to anyone with an interest in it, but in the end the council voted to put the land for sale by bid.

In other business at Monday’s meeting, the council:

Met newly hired police officer Matt Hotzler.

Hotzler started April 29, and is from Wells. He has worked in Freeborn County and has been a part time officer in Blue Earth in the past.

Learned the two picnic shelters, one in Putnam Park and one in Steinberg Park, will begin construction soon.

Heard a construction project update from city engineer Wes Brown, of Bolton and Menk Engineers.

Brown says the Gorman and 12th streets project nearly has all the underground work completed and curbs will be installed soon.

He says the work at the airport is on schedule, with most of the old runway surface removed and stockpiled, and earth work expected to begin this week.

Granted a beer license to the Faribault County Fair Board to operate a beer garden during the county fair week.
