He’s ready to be orange

By Staff | Oct 6, 2013

On Wednesday, Blue Earth is going to turn orange.

In fact, it will become so orange that the name itself will be proclaimed to be Orange Earth, at least for one day.

It is all part of an anti-bullying campaign that is called “Raise a Giant” sponsored by Green Giant Company and the Minneapolis based PACER group, celebrating October as Anti-Bullying month.

Plus, Oct. 9 is being heralded as “Unity Day” – a special day to support bullying prevention.

The official Unity Day color is orange. Individuals across the country are being urged to wear orange that day to send a message of hope to end bullying in all communities and recognize those who have been bullied.

Part of the campaign involves turning Blue Earth’s famous Giant statue from green to orange.

On Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., the official unveiling of the Orange Giant will be held. Local residents are invited to attend the event, which is being filmed to be shown as part of a national anti-bullying campaign.

Part of Wednesday’s program will be Blue Earth mayor Rick Scholtes reading his official proclamation turning the name of the city from Blue to Orange Earth.

Other speakers include General Mills integrated marketing director Marissa Wildermuth and the director of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, Julie Hertzog.

Plans are for the Giant to wear an orange colored tunic, and to be bathed in an orange light all week.

Photos and video of the event will be sent out to media across the country.

“This is exciting for our community,” says Blue Earth Chamber director Cindy Lyon. “Although we are not involved in this event, other than helping out, it should give Blue Earth some nice national exposure.”

Lyon also finished giving the Red Barn (tourist information center) a fresh coat of paint just in time for the big unveiling on Wednesday morning.
