USC expels student

By Staff | May 10, 2015

The United South Central School Board held a special meeting on May 7 regarding the expulsion of a current student. The special meeting finished within an hour of convening and dealing with the one item on the agenda.

The board met and held a closed session to determine the student’s expulsion. The closed session lasted approximately 20 minutes and the board reconnected, presenting a resolution to expel the student.

According to the resolution, both the student and the parents of the student were served with a written notice of the proposed expulsion and a written copy of their rights under the Minnesota Pupil Fair Dismissal Act. Upon receiving the documents, the family elected to waive in writing their right to a hearing on the proposed expulsion.

Under the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, the written notice of the proposed expulsion, the name of the student, and the signed waiver of rights are classified as private data.

In the meeting, the board unanimously decided to expel the student from USC school effective May 7 through the last day of student attendance for the 2014-15 school year.

The resolution states that the student may apply for enrollment effective after the last day of student attendance for the current school year.

The resolution was declared duly passed on a role call vote and adopted with all school board members in attendance in favor of the expulsion.
